Lesson Title: Public Service Announcements (Use with WELLNESS CENTER software)
Grade Level: 9-10
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
- Students will complete the youth health risk assessment assigned to them.
- Students will review their own results from the assessment.
- Students will create a one minute public service announcement based on their
assigned health risk assessment containing a minimum of three facts included
with their results.
ACTIVITIES/PROCEDURES:
- Divide students into groups based on the assessment they are to complete.
- Allow about ten minutes to complete the assessment and review/print out
results.
- Define student groups as those that have all done the same assessment.
- Allow about 15 minutes for groups to discuss the assessment and general
information included with the results. They must work together to create a
one minute public service announcement to be presented to the rest of the
class. All students must be involved in the planning and presentation of the
public service announcement, which must include at least three facts from
the results of the assessment.
- Students present their public service announcement to the remainder of the
class.
RATIONALE: This is a lesson tailored to health education students.
This lesson meets part of NASPE goal #5, "Demonstrates responsible personal
and social behavior…"
REFLECTION:
- Students will be able to work together to discuss the effects of different
healthy and risky behaviors on short term and long term health.
- Students will have an opportunity to creatively present facts to classmates.
- As an extension activity, students would be asked to write a journal about
their reaction to their individual results and to brainstorm ways to modify
their current behaviors/practices in order to improve their health.
