LESSON TITLE: Introduction to Wellness/Discovery Center
Lesson #: 17
GRADE LEVEL APPROPRATENESS: 9

GOALS:

  1. To make students aware of the availability and utilization procedures of technology available in the Discovery Center.
  2. To have students begin learning to utilize the TriFIT program
  3. To make students aware that computer technology can be used to assist them in their quest for wellness.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Students will be able to use the scanner to input a picture onto a cover.
  2. Students will create a cover that depicts them participating in their favorite activity.
  3. Students will import clip-art to depict other activities they like to participate.
  4. Students will begin using the TriFIT program by completing the PAR-Q and programs and or HRA's.

ACTIVITIES/PROCEDURES:

  1. Student will follow directions of the Discovery Center Teacher for rules/regulations/procedures that need to be followed in the Center.
  2. Students will create a cover for their Wellness Notebook they create utilizing photographs, clipart, color, graphics fonts, etc. once cover is created; the students will print out 2 covers. One is put into notebook; other handed in for me.
  3. Students complete the PAR-Q questionnaire. Students will print out the questionnaire results and put in notebook.
  4. Students will complete the HRA's , print results and place in notebook.

RATIONALE:

  1. This lesson serves as an introduction to the Discovery Center.
  2. This lesson serves as the starting point for students to learn what Technology is available in the Discovery Center.
  3. Students will seek and select physical activities based on their own personal interest, meaning, and fulfillment. (Nat. Standard #3)
  4. Students will gain basic operations and concept skills in using the TriFIT System. (Tech Standard #1)
  5. Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software. (Tech Standard #2)
  6. Students will use the TriFIT to process data and report results. (Tech Standard #5)

REFLECTION: The students will walk away with a comfort level with the computer technology available in the Discovery Center. All students can create a cover to show everyone what they do for wellness. Students will begin collecting data about themselves and feel more comfortable and enjoy physical education. Students will see the ease in collecting data and producing results that can assist them in "Fitness for a Lifetime."
