Lesson Title: Maintaining Your Target Zone
Lesson #: 21
Grade Level Appropriateness 9

GOALS AND OBJECTIVE:

  1. The students will learn to monitor and estimate their target heart rate.
  2. The students will work within their Target Heart Rate Zone.

ACTIVITIES/PROCEDURES

  1. Students will go to the track and warm up and stretch.
  2. Students will walk-run around the track trying to maintain their exercise level within their own individual Target Heart Rate Zone.
  3. At the completion of each lap students will take their heart rate by taking their pulse for 6 seconds and multiplying that number by 10 to get their heart rate for 1 minute.
  4. If the students heart rate is within their individual Target Heart Rate Zone, he/she will be given a rubber band to place on his/her wrist.
  5. Students will continue to walk-run for the remainder of the period.
  6. A cool down period will complete the class.

RATIONAL: Understand that physical activities provide opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction.

REFLECTION: Students learned to work within their own individual Target Heart Rate Zone while exercising and socializing.
