Lesson Title: Health Heart Lab
Lesson Plan Lesson #28
Grade Level Appropriateness: 9-12

Goals and Objectives: To help every child at Nordhoff H.S. have a better understanding of why they need to stay physically fit in order to be mentally fit. Also how physical activity will help them deal with stress of all kinds. By understanding all of the above they will have the tool to carry on into adulthood.

We will be instructing all students taking a P.E. class. (Grades 9-12) We will be putting our TNT (Thanks No Thanks Tobacco Program) kids through the lab. This will give them a better understanding of how smoking affects their physical fitness, which in turn affects their mental fitness.

Activities and Procedures:

The lab consists of either all girls or all boys. On regular scheduled days take 4 to 5 students and on double days 10 to 12 students. First we will introduce the program and why it is important. At this time we will also hook them up to a heart rate monitor then run them through the following labs:

  1. height/weight
  2. oxygen level
  3. blood pressure
  4. resting heart rate
  5. body comp.
  6. lung capacity.

Now they will run through two labs:

  1. First is a step lab which they will step for one min. than check their working HR and than two recovery HR. A one-minute and a five-minute.
  2. Second lab is a jump rope lab. They will jump for one min. than do the same working HR and recovery HR. Third lab is gotten from the teacher when the kid run the time mile. The times are record in file.

Reflection: On how they can use physical fitness later in life. If they feel they could put a physical fitness program together themselves. We talk about teen problems. Everything in or done in the lab is very confidential. They are allowed to ask very confidential questions about their physical fitness without being teased or made to feel bad. We find they talk very freely.
